Bibliographic record
A surrogate record produced by cataloguers (usually according to defined standards) and included in a library catalogue or bibliographic database.

Catalogue
An organised description of a collection of documents.

Cataloguing
The process of compiling surrogate records for documents by identifying and recording certain physical attributes of the documents and information relating to authorship, publication and contents.

GUI (Graphical user interface)
An interface that permits use of images, incorporating more than text, or eliminating it altogether so that interaction is assisted by icons, maps, diagrams and other graphical representations.

Information management
Procedures, which may be technical, analytical or strategic, for optimising the use of information.

Knowledge management
Information management that takes into account unrecorded information or knowledge retained by an enterprise’s personnel.

M

MARC (Machine-readable cataloguing)
A group of formats for the exchange of bibliographic data among computerised library systems. MARC is the main data communication standard in use in information centres.

OPAC (Online public access catalogue)
A library catalogue with an interactive search interface for public use.
